Video Seven  hold a very special place in the pre cert world. They effectively were the forerunners of the mighty Go label, this is where it all started. The Sevens shared the same premises as the later Go label and from these premises launched one of the earliest houses in the UK. Utilising mainly 1930's and 1940's era titles all naturally in B&W they began the road to feeding the frenzied hunger for feature films available to purchase to view in your own home in early '80's Britain, though actual release dates for these titles are not available. It would be fair to say that there were few rental outfits available at the time and the cost of purchasing tapes would be astronomical in today's terms. It was not uncommon for new releases to cost £40/£50 and upwards, into the later '80's new rental releases could be bought for the princely sum of £79.99, for one tape!

Utilising a carton as the vehicle to house the tapes rather than the later large clamshells we know were popular for rental releases, many other labels began life by releasing their titles in carton:  Intervision, Hokushin, HVS among many others led the way in the early days of pre recorded cassettes in the UK using this style, clearly a cheaper alternative to more hardy plastic case we later became accustomed to.

Due to the very early arrival of these tapes, the fact they mainly were in B&W, the fact the films themselves were rather dated at the time of release, being released in a carton format and the cost to purchase as they were unlikely available to rent in many places has made these titles so rare that some have never been seen since. As you will see below there are many many titles which are still to be discovered and are awaiting a scan.

The cartons themselves were of a uniform nature and the 'title card' would be printed seperately and glued to the front, a very primal and labour intensive way of designing and releasing a product. The synopsis on the rear would be in the form of a sticker placed upon the uniform carton, the synopsis themselves often very brief.

Classic titles staring James Cagney, Bela Lugosi, Fred Astair and other heroes of the silver screen from  the era, mainly thrillers and gangster tales made up the catalogue, however the odd horror could be found including 'Vampire bat' starring Lugosi and what is often classed as the birth of the Zombie film in Victor Halperin's 'White Zombie'. The later being the title/tape  the owners of this site court more than any other.

These really are very special in the pre cert world, rare, valuable and desirable, enjoy.......
